Why You Should Give Someone The Chance You Never Got

Have you ever wanted an opportunity so bad, but no one gave you a chance to prove yourself?

Learn how one person never gave up and unlocked their greatest potential.

Meet Andrew

Andrew first heard about The Disruption Institute at our Compute Midwest conference, and applied immediately.

During the interview process, we learned he was a recruiter with zero programming experience.

However, he loved Apple products and always wanted to build mobile apps.

We told him this wasn’t going to be easy – but I could hear the passion in his voice when he talked about becoming a mobile developer.

He was accepted into the class & what he accomplished went well beyond anything we could have fathomed.

From Zero To Breakthrough

Andrew showed up the first day with eyes and mind wide open.

He shared his story with me – one that included where he was & where he hoped to be.

You see, he was trying hard to provide for his family, but wasn’t doing so well as a recruiter with low base pay & commission.

He didn’t have health insurance, a critical need with a toddler and newborn at home.

However, Andrew wasn’t fazed by the pressure – he knew this class was an opportunity to change his destiny.

He dove right in, soaking up every bit of knowledge, asking questions and writing tons of code until the wee hours of the morning.

Things weren’t easy, but he never gave up.

Andrew’s passion infected the entire class.

In just 9 weeks, he got his Niko The Neko guessing game into the app store.

Just a few weeks later, he got another app in the app store, called Alfabeto en Español .

Inspired by his children, created it to help teach kids the spanish alphabet.

A New Hurdle

After graduating our program, he began searching for a new job as a mobile developer.

We helped make introductions and many companies were impressed that he had come so far in such a short time.

But Andrew didn’t fill their litany of “checkboxes”.

It just seemed like no one would give him a chance.

I knew exactly how he felt.
You probably do too.

Something had to be done.

All he needed was one company to believe in him.

Just like we did.

So that year, I closed out Compute Midwest and shared his story….hoping someone in the audience could help.

The Next Chapter

Because of our plea at Compute Midwest, Andrew got connected with contract based opportunities for a few iOS projects.

Several months later, we were ecstatic to hear that Intouch Solutions hired him on full time as an iOS developer.

Finally, a great company gave him the chance he deserved!!

We touched base often and he was thrilled to be learning and growing so much from Intouch.

Almost a year later, Andrew called me to share his excitement about accepting a new position on the IBM Mobile team in Chicago. ibm

In less than two years, he went from no coding experience to an iOS developer for a great marketing agency… and now he’s starting a role at IBM as a Senior Mobile Dev.

I still look back and am so grateful for The Disruption Institute.

I distinctly remember telling my wife that if I can get into DI it’s going to change our lives forever.

I was totally right.

~ Andrew

What if Andrew had listened to all of the people and companies that didn’t believe in him?

What if he had just given up?

The real truth is that the future will be shaped by people like Andrew….not those who can’t see beyond “checkboxes”.

There are many Andrews out there. I see them every day.

If that’s you, don’t give up.

Be like Andrew.

Thank You, Andrew

Congratulations!! You deserve this. I am SO proud of you!!!

Thank you for being an example that amazing things can happen when you’re relentless.

Thank you for showing the world that you always, always bet on those who are passionate and motivated.

Thank you for proving this idea was everything we hoped it could be….and so much more.

You inspired EVERYONE at The Disruption Institute and we can’t wait to see what you do next.

Your journey fills my heart in ways that I can’t express.

This is one of the stories I’ll never forget.

When I’m 80 years old, this is one I’ll still be telling.

Thank you, Andrew. Thank you so much!!!

  1. I ran into Andrew shortly after he graduated from the Disruption Institute. I have to echo your sentiments – anyone that wants to break into development can be inspired by Andrew’s attitude, intellect, and drive. He’s a great guy – we’re sorry to lose him from the recruiting field, but I’m excited he’s on a path he’s chosen. Kudos to you both.

Way to keep pushing, Andrew. Sometimes a destination that should be easy to reach has no directions and many obstacles in the way. Your only choice is to keep fighting for your dream and creating your own reality. You’ve cleared your own path, sir, and should be applauded for it.

  4. Kris k says:

    Great story!

  5. Thank you guys for taking the time to believe in my brother. When he puts his mind to an idea there is no stopping him from carrying it out fully and whole heartedly. I’m incredibly proud of him, despite what he may think since I am his baby sister.
The next few years are gonna be a great adventure!

Congratulations Andrew – I have taught a lot of people that if you don’t like your circumstances > then change them, if you can’t change them > then go create the circumstances you want!! You did just that and are an example to many.

Mike what an awesome job you have done over the years and taking a personal approach to close out helping Andrew by leveraging the network you have worked to influence and truly take the role of a true leader, very grateful to be a part of KC IT professionals!! Keep up the awesome, change/disruptive rich work!
